Bookstores are more than just repositories for the printed word. They can be charming souvenir shops, galleries selling the works of local artists and stationery stores stocked with handmade cards. In short: Bookstores are the perfect place to shop when you want to find unique gifts for friends and family. At these four Cabarrus County bookstores, you’ll find all that and more — even a cozy coffee nook or two where you can relax with a post-shopping beverage.

Second Look Books

Harrisburg

When you’re seeking that hard-to-find treasure for the bookworm in your life, look no further than Second Look Books. Spoiler alert: It might become your new favorite used bookstore with its sheer volume of offerings and variety of gently used books for sale. You’ll find thousands of books in all genres at this family-owned store. You’ll also find that the price is right. Nearly every book is sold at such a deep discount that you’re likely to grab a book (or 10) for yourself.

Second Look Books is right across from two other Harrisburg favorites, Frozen Kups and Vortex Bottle Shop. Whether you’re craving something sweet or it’s time for lunch, stop by these neighboring local establishments to enjoy a tasty treat.

Editions Coffee Shop & Bookstore

Kannapolis

At Editions Coffee Shop & Bookstore in downtown Kannapolis, a quaint millhouse turned bookshop, you can roam from room to room for hours, where each new space boasts floor-to-ceiling shelves lined with books of all genres. The staff is happy to help you find something specific, or you can wander the wares yourself. Along with books, you’ll find candles, earrings, glassware, and more.

Kannapolis was once home to the world’s largest manufacturer of household textiles and this shop honors the city’s history with its offerings. The Yarn Room inside Editions provides those who knit, crochet, and craft with a variety of yarns to choose from including local hand-dyed yarns along with other accessories such as needles and hooks.

Check out the art displayed on the walls, too. Created by local artists, most pieces are for sale and would make for a one-of-a-kind gift. Round out your visit to Editions with a stop by the on-site coffee shop for a caramel frappe, then mark your calendar for one of their many author events and book signings.

Goldberry Books

Concord

Named after a Tolkien character from The Lord of the Rings — an indicator of the owners’ true love of the literary — Goldberry Books invites shoppers to sit and stay awhile. Velvety couches and soft leather armchairs nestle close to the stacked bookcases, and ottomans provide a welcome footrest. But with all there is to explore here, you might decide to skip the R&R. That’s because Goldberry not only sells new and used books (including an impressive selection of collectible editions), but the store also offers cute stationery and artsy greeting cards, blank journals and notebooks, and quirky arts and crafts.

As the weather continues to cool down, Goldberry has added locally printed sweatshirts to their offerings. Wrap one up with a good read and a gift card from Press & Porter Coffee & Pourhouse next door for the ultimate cozy gift. And if you’re shopping for little ones, the children’s room at Goldberry has adorable books for all ages.

Goldberry Books is located on Union Street in historic downtown Concord where shoppers will find several locally owned gems. Save the Date for Nov. 30 to check out the Small Business Saturday Holiday Trail when a trolley will help shoppers complete their gift lists while exploring even more of the area.

Ssalefish Comics

Concord

Don’t let the size of Ssalefish Comics fool you. It might be small, but its offerings are robust. Shop for new-release and past issues of comics and graphic novels, new and collectible action figures, vintage toys, posters from film, television and comic books, and even autographed items. The staff is not only knowledgeable but also helpful — great for shoppers who are buying gifts for loved ones — and merchandise is smartly organized throughout the store.

Ssalefish is located steps away from the Cabarrus County Visitor Information Center which carries titles that share the area’s history and highlight the stories of our community. Along with books, the Visitor Center gift shop is stocked with North Carolina and Cabarrus County-branded souvenirs and a variety of locally made goods, from barebcue sauce and honey to soaps, jewelry, and more.
